Matrix Orbital GTT Touchscreen
Matrix Orbital GTT Touchscreen
I'm about to start a new project using the Orbital Matrix GTT 480272A Touchscreen. I was wondering if anyone else has used it and if there are any higher level C/C++ tools written for it. I thought I saw mention of such a library on this forum but now I can't find it.

Hi Tod,
I have no idea about drivers but it looks expensive to me (It's the Scottish blood you see)
)
Noritake in the UK have these modules which would offer you the same screen size but at about half the price.

I myself have used the CrystalFontz 3.5" LCD's with the SSD2119 controller and a driver from Ramtex. I see they now do a nice little PCB so you can hook it up for testing. I went ahead and did my own PCB for it. Took me less than 15 mins to port the code to Netburner and I was up and running with full colour graphics and touch. Have now used it in 2 projects.

Re: Matrix Orbital GTT Touchscreen
Dave,
Thanks for the reference to the Noritake display. Unfortunately, we can't seem to get those here in the States. It is much more attractively priced. We tend to build limited production instrumentation and the cost difference isn't really significant in the grand scheme of things but I was hoping to try your suggestion just because the GTT still seems to me to be more of a beta product. The display itself is gorgeous but the firmware seems to have issues. I have most of it working but it false triggers a lot. If I can't get that resolved it will be a VERY expensive non-touch panel, and the whole point was to save the money and work required of cutting holes, silk-screening etc required of hardware buttons and switches.

Tod,
You might want to try www.reachtech.com. I have one of their devices and seems to work (but, have never actually used it in a project). Wide variety of screen sizes with serial interfaces.

Re: Matrix Orbital GTT Touchscreen
Hi Tod,
I contacted them about this. It seems that the displays can't be sold outside of Europe but if you had someone in Europe who could purchase them on your behalf then it seems that you can get around this issue. This was info I got from one of the guys at Noritake itself. I asked about purchasing then using them in products overseas and this is OK it seems. I have a UK client who is willing to help me on this!
Another option for you for future work is to look at the likes of Front Panel Express for making small runs of panels. I use them all the time for short run designs. They have a US office but the only downside to them is that they can't off the inserts on the rear. The German office does and this is the one I use.

For an idea of what they can do, have a look at these 2 designs on my website. They are both done with their service. I don't work for them or get commission, I am simply a satisified customer. One of these is quote complicated and has rear machined surfaces so that it fits into the box nice and flush. They do all the logo's you see via HPGL imports and nicely filled. The software calculates the cost as you design it so you can see what you will end up paying. Check it out. By the way, the Remote Torque is Netburner powered!

I have also attached an image of the rear mounted inserts that Germany offers. These are great for making front panels with PCB's on the rear so that you avoid having to drill holes all the way through and have screws showing on the front. They come in different lengths. Much neater for the final look.
Regards

Just a final note, the instrument using this touch panel was finished a little while ago but i just got a picture from the manufacturer. In case anyone is interested in seeing the final product.
